A grab lorry loads straight from a heap on your site using a hydraulic arm that can reach over walls, fences and parked vehicles. That means no skip permit from the council, no skip sitting on your driveway for days, and no manual barrowing into a skip. We cover Faringdon and a 30-mile radius, so most Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire sites are within reach. Grab lorries are best suited to clean, inert loads: soil, spoil, hardcore, rubble, concrete and bulk green waste. A typical 8-wheel grab lorry takes around 14 to 16 tonnes per load. If your material is mixed with general waste or furniture, a skip is a better fit because grab lorries are priced and permitted for inert muckaway, not mixed rubbish. Heavy, compacted loads such as wet clay or reinforced concrete can be collected but we may need to keep loads lighter to stay within the lorry's weight limit. Turnaround is usually faster than skip hire. We book a time slot, arrive, load in 20 to 40 minutes depending on volume, and go. There is nothing left on site. Material is weighed at the transfer station and recycled where possible: clean hardcore and concrete are crushed into recycled aggregate and used in road-building and construction. We can usually arrange same-day or next-working-day collection for most jobs.

Grab Lorry Hire, FAQs

Do I need a council permit for a grab lorry?

No. A grab lorry loads from private land or from a heap on your driveway without leaving anything on the public highway, so no skip permit is required. If the lorry needs to park on the road while operating, it parks legally in an available bay like any other vehicle. This makes grab hire useful in areas where permits are hard to get or where you want to avoid the wait.

How much material can a grab lorry take in one visit?

Our grab lorries typically hold around 14 to 16 tonnes of inert material per load, which is roughly equivalent to a 20-yard roll-on roll-off skip filled with soil or hardcore. If you have more than that we can arrange multiple loads. Light, bulky waste such as green cuttings takes up more volume than weight, so loads are sometimes limited by the body capacity rather than the tonne limit.

Can the grab arm reach over a wall or fence?

Yes. The hydraulic grab arm has a reach of around 6 metres from the side of the lorry, which is enough to clear most garden walls, low fences and parked cars. The lorry does need to pull up within that distance on a firm, level surface. It cannot reach material that is inside a building, at the bottom of a narrow passage, or more than about 2 metres above ground level.

What waste types are not accepted on a grab lorry?

Grab lorries are not suitable for mixed general waste, furniture, mattresses, bagged rubbish, hazardous materials, asbestos, or liquids. Plasterboard needs to go separately because it must not be mixed with inert loads under waste regulations. If your waste is mixed, a skip is the right option. If you are unsure what you have on site, contact us before booking and we can advise the correct service.
